PROSPER

Attendance Incentivization for At-Risk Youth

PROSPER (People Reaching for Opportunities to Succeed Personally, Educationally and Realistically) is a one year, half day supplemental vocational focused education program in coordination with Long Island school districts for high school juniors and seniors ages 16-21 who may be at risk for not completing their education. The program increases the attendance and retention rates for students, as they earn four credits towards those needed to receive their high school diploma.

Students gain confidence and an understanding of the relevancy of education as it relates to the world of work by exploring their community and the employment opportunities available after graduation. Most students who complete PROSPER attend college, enroll in vocational training, or secure employment upon graduation.

Understanding How Education Impacts Employment

Real-world learning experiences go beyond the classroom, providing the necessary interpersonal and leadership skills to navigate adulthood. Through partnerships with high school districts, colleges, and local businesses and industries, students receive career assessments, career guidance, counseling, and tutoring related to their long-range interests.

  • College Campus Day Trips offer an in-depth look into the many areas of study available and what it takes to be a competitive applicant at local schools.
  • Weekly Vocational Tours with The Viscardi Center’s corporate partners inform students of realistic job requirements and responsibilities while unlocking a deeper understanding of today’s job market and the benefits they can receive once employed (i.e.: health insurance, retirement savings, and paid time off)
  • Cooperative Learning encourages students to collectively explore everyday obstacles and challenges, such as financial planning and money management.
  • Peer Mentorship and professional shadowing opportunities expand leadership skills and exposure to fresh perspectives.
