Raquel Bernstein, a senior at the Henry Viscardi School at The Viscardi Center, which serves children with severe physical disabilities from pre-K through grade 12, received a 2013 Yes I Can! Award from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) at the Yes I Can! Award Ceremony held in San Antonio, Texas as part of the CEC 2013 Convention & Expo. One of 21 Award recipients, Raquel received hers for the transition category, one of seven categories which include everything from academics to self-advocacy.
“I am proud to see Raquel achieve this milestone and be recognized by the special education teachers, administrators and professionals of the Council for Exceptional Children,” said Patrice McCarthy Kuntzler, Executive Director, Henry Viscardi School at The Viscardi Center. “Throughout its history, Henry Viscardi School educators have made many significant presentations about effective practices developed at the school,”
Jennifer Noronha, PhD. OTR/L, the occupational therapist at the Henry Viscardi School who nominated Raquel for the Award, encourages the students daily. Her motto, “Dream big! Never give up in the face of adversity. You have what it takes to succeed.”
