Two business classes from the Henry Viscardi School at The Viscardi Center, which serves children with physical disabilities, were recently invited on a tour of The First National Bank of Long Island to observe the inner-workings of a financial institution and hone valuable money management skills.
Students met with staff at the Roslyn Heights branch, where they learned about the bank’s daily operations. They also gained insight into opening savings accounts and protecting their finances from theft, as well as using ATMs, online banking services, and drive-thrus for speedy transactions.
The most anticipated part of the trip came when students were given an exclusive peek inside the vault and were able to spend a few fleeting moments holding stacks of cash.
One student remarked on the detailed security procedures enacted by the bank. “I really like knowing that my money will be kept safe while it’s here,” she said.
Branch manager Joan Porter, who led a round of money-themed bingo and handed out goody bags to conclude the visit, said that hosting the tour was a rewarding experience for all involved. “When you look at these children, and you see them happy, laughing, and asking questions, it’s something special,” she said. “There are lessons we can all learn from them.”
