New skills and some coaching helped him secure a job, bolster his self confidence and put him on a path for success and independence.
“I recommend the Business Skills with Office Technology program to anyone with a disability who is interested in doing administrative work.”
Stephen has a learning disability that has impacted his ability to reach a level of employment that would enable him to live independently. He came to Abilities, Inc. at The Viscardi Center to gain skills and assistance that would reverse his sporadic work history. Though shy and reserved, we could see he was bright and had great potential to acquire new skills that would make him more marketable to employers.
He attended our vocational evaluation program and then our Business Skills with Office Technology program where he developed the skill set needed to succeed in the business arena. His keyboarding speed skyrocketed to over 90 wpm and he acquired new and updated computer and office skills.
Through practice interviews, he learned how to interview with confidence and express all of the skills he now had. The IRS hired Stephen as a full time office assistant at a competitive salary after meeting him at one of our scheduled interviewing days with potential employers. Through the help of an Abilities, Inc. job coach, he acclimated to his position well. He now hopes to move out and live independently. More than anything, Stephen believes in himself and is succeeding in a way that he never dreamed would happen.
“I would like to thank the staff at Abilities, Inc. for their patience, support, and guidance,” said Stephen. “I definitely would recommend the Business Skills with Office Technology program to anyone with a disability who is interested in doing administrative work.”
Stephen is one of thousands of success stories we can share and a shining example of the feelings of independence and empowerment employment can bring.
