Since graduating from Henry Viscardi School (HVS) in 2019, Keanu has continued preparing for a career. After moving to Pawling, New York, he brought home his first guide dog, Tilly, from Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
To build additional skills to enter the workforce, Keanu completed online career development courses through the New York State Commission of the Blind. This alum’s thirst for knowledge did not stop there. In 2021, having received assistance from HVS in applying for assistance through the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), he participated in the “Think Ahead” program at Dutchess Community College. The program prepares individuals with learning disabilities for competitive employment. Keanu continued his educational journey in 2022 by successfully completing a 15-week Ready Employment program at the VISIONS Center on Blindness in Spring Valley.
All his preparation paid off! Last year, Keanu landed a job as an Administrative Assistant at the Pawling Town Hall. Well-liked by his colleagues -– which is no surprise to us – he and Tilly thoroughly enjoy working in the friendly, office environment.
Reflecting on his time at Viscardi, one of Keanu’s fondest memories is playing wheelchair basketball with his fellow teammates in tournaments. By combining the skills and knowledge he acquired at Viscardi with the variety of work-readiness programs, Keanu knows with Tilly by his side he can do anything!
Keanu’s advice for others… “College is not for everyone… go straight into job training. Whatever you do, go big and be yourself!”
