Before graduating from the Henry Viscardi School (HVS), the entire 12th grade Media Technology class produced a video about the school, “The School That Love Built,” for submission into the High School Video Festival sponsored by CW Post. It wasn’t long before the clip took first prize in the short documentary category.
In “The School That Love Built,” the student filmmakers describe the ways HVS impacted their lives and tell the story of founder Dr. Henry Viscardi, Jr., who himself wore prosthetic legs. Because Viscardi established a school with high academic standards for children with disabilities, and thanks to today’s dedicated staff, the students say they have a place they can be themselves, reach their potential, and not feel “different.”
The short also highlights some of the innovative programs offered at HVS, such as the Farmer’s Market created by the Environmental Science and Social Studies classes, and wheelchair basketball.
According to the students, the Henry Viscardi School delivered on its promise of achievement, hope, and ability. It’s their “dream factory.” The next step is bringing those dreams to fruition.
