Tenzin S.

Tenzin S., a 12th-grader at the Henry Viscardi School at The Viscardi Center, an accredited Pre-K through grade 12 school for children with severe physical disabilities, joined some 70+ local artists taking part in the Adaptive Design Association’s Chairs For Humanity Celebration by painting an original design — a nature theme with flowers — on a large, white cardboard chair. The painted chairs will be displayed throughout October in prominent Manhattan venues including the Hilton Hotel, Goldman Sachs, the Fashion District and The Center For Architecture. At the conclusion of the project, the artwork will be raffled off to raise awareness and funds to provide customized equipment for children with disabilities in New York City.

Describing Tenzin as a talented painter, Henry Viscardi School art teacher Irene Savage said, “She’s very dedicated and she sets a plan for herself,” adding, “I think it’s incredible that she puts herself out there.” To that end, Tenzin often takes on extra projects and has donated artwork for Celebrity Sports Night, The Viscardi Center’s signature fundraising event. A serious student of art, next year she plans to continue her education at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) or SUNY Purchase.

Tenzin was born in Tibet, moved to India, and came to the U.S. at age nine. Having a longstanding interest in art, she completed her first painting two years ago. She aspires to become an artist (professional painter), focusing on abstract realism (art without a specific focus, imitating nature), and is excited that her work will benefit others.

Chairs For Humanity culminates with an open house and reception at the Association’s Mid-town offices in late October.
