In its 49th year, Celebrity Sports Night is one of the premier fundraising events on Long Island and raises funds to enrich the lives of children and adults with disabilities. This year's event, presented by DiversityInc and chaired by John A. Danzi, Principal, Long Island Hotels, will recognize:
• Honoree - Luke Visconti, CEO and Founder of DiversityInc
• Corporate Excellence in Disability Best Practices - Robin Hayes, President & CEO, JetBlue Airways
• Sportsman of the Year - Clark Gillies, NHL Hall of Famer and former New York Islander
• Roy Campanella Award - Victor Calise, Commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office for People
While the evening may seem typical, it’s one-of-a-kind. During the cocktail reception, guests are provided with an opportunity to collect autographs and speak with dozens of athletes and celebrities in attendance. Guests can also strike a pose with the athletes and celebrities, even take a few selfies! A silent auction featuring sports memorabilia, show tickets and more takes place during the reception. A formal sit-down dinner is followed by a live auction with several “priceless” experiences. One of the evening’s highlights is an original performance, produced by Olympic Figure Skating Champion JoJo Starbuck, featuring students of the Henry Viscardi School at The Viscardi Center with appearances by some of the attending athletes and celebrities.
Guests at the 2014 event included 3-time World Series Champ, Dwight “Doc” Gooden, J.R. Martinez, the season 13 “Dancing with the Stars” Champion, and Steve Schirripa, known for his role as “Bobby Bacala” on The Sopranos. Past athlete and celebrity participants also include Joe Namath, Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, Joe Theismann, Sean Landeta, Bud Harrelson, Mookie Wilson, Bobby Nystrom, Johnny Weir, Tai Babilonia, Randy Gardner, Jim Brown, Joe Frazier, Keith Hernandez, Boomer Esiason, Willie Mays, Walt Frazier, Lou Pinella, Stephen Baker, Karl Nelson, John Schmitt, Darryl Strawberry, and many other sports legends.
